When a ridge of ice builds along the edge of a roof, the gutters hanging right under it usually take the blame. We understand why. They're the part of the house you can see, and the icicles hang off them.
But cleaning your gutters won't stop an ice dam. We'd rather say that plainly before you call us than sell you a gutter cleaning as the fix.
What actually causes an ice dam
The clearest explanation we've found is an older article by Paul Fisette for the UMass Building and Construction Technology program. UMass keeps it online as an archived piece from 2011 and notes that some details may be outdated, so treat it as background, not a building code.
His point is simple. An ice dam needs snow on the roof, heat to melt it, and cold to freeze it again. Heat escaping from the house warms the upper part of the roof, and the snow there melts. That water runs down under the snow until it reaches the overhang, which the house doesn't warm, and it freezes into a band of ice at the edge. More water backs up behind it.
In his words: “Contrary to popular belief, gutters do not cause ice dams.”
Where the gutters fit in
The same article adds a fair warning. Gutters “do help concentrate ice and water at a very vulnerable roof-eaves area.” They don't start the problem. They sit exactly where it ends up.
Fall is a different story. From October into November the leaves come down, and plenty of them end up in the gutters. Once leaves pack in, rainwater has nowhere to go but over the edge, down the siding and into the beds below. That's the job gutter cleaning does: it clears the leaves out before winter. It doesn't change how warm your attic keeps the roof.
Don't wait for the first snowfall
Our advice to neighbors this time of year is not to wait until the first snowfall to get the property ready. We'd rather clear leaves, branches and dead plants with time to spare, so the lawn goes into winter clean.
That advice is about the yard. If you also want the gutters done before winter, say so when you request the estimate, and we'll check the timing against our schedule. Over the next few weeks we're doing fall cleanups and preparing properties for winter.
What we look at before quoting gutter cleaning
Every house is set up differently. We'd rather see the gutters and the way in before quoting than guess over the phone, which is why our gutter cleaning estimate happens at the property. When you reach out from a Leominster address, these details help most:
- Which gutters you want cleaned, whether that's the whole house or just the side under the big tree.
- How we reach them: locked gates, a slope along the side of the house, a narrow side yard, or pets in the back.
- A few photos of the gutters and the ground underneath, plus the timing you have in mind.
The scope is set after we see the house and the access. Gutter cleaning is a separate service, and we quote it on its own.
What we don't do, and who to call for it
None of our services include work on the roof itself. We don't repair roofs, remove ice or snow from them, install gutter guards or fix downspouts. Insulation and attic ventilation aren't our trade either, and that's where the UMass article puts the real fix: keep the heat in the house and the roof cold. If you already get ice dams every winter, a roofer or an insulation contractor is the right call.
Down on the ground, it's another matter. Our ice control service covers the steps, walkways, entrances and driveway you name, and it's quoted separately from snow removal. It stops at the roofline.
The yard is its own job too. Gutter cleaning isn't part of a fall cleanup, as our post on booking a fall cleanup explains, and nothing gets added automatically. Want both? Ask, and we'll quote each one.
Request a gutter estimate in Leominster
Clinton is our home base, at 19 Kittredge Pl, and Leominster is on our service-area list, from French Hill and North Leominster to Lincoln Terrace and the Route 12 corridor. If you searched for gutter cleaning near me from one of those neighborhoods, availability still depends on your exact address, the season, the scope and our current schedule, and we confirm it with you directly. The estimate is free. We don't publish prices, because the cost depends on what we see at your house.
Request your free estimate and get your Leominster gutters on the list before the first snow.
